The Sport and Recreation Management Graduate Certificate is an online program aimed at enhancing management and leadership skills in the fields of recreation, sport, and health. Students will gain knowledge and understanding in the areas of finance, marketing, contemporary trends, facility and event management. It also provides the opportunity to connect and learn with others in the industry.

This certificate is a graduate certificate and may be applied to a course based master degree in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Courses are delivered online, there is no in-class component.

  • What skills will I gain
    Upon successful completion of the certificate, students will be able to:

    1) Working knowledge of how to manage sport and recreation organizations effectively in the public, non-profit/voluntary and commercial sectors, including facility and event management.
    2) Understanding of the role of the public sector (federal, provincial and municipal governments) as it pertains to recreation, health, wellness and amateur sport.
    3) Financial analysis and management in recreation, sport and related industries.
    4) Apply marketing and sponsorship skills in sport and recreation organizations, including promotions, public relations, consumer behavior, marketing, communications and branding.
    5) Apply critical thinking and problem solving skills specific to sport, recreation and community services management issues.
    6) Effective professional oral, written and visual communication skills in the context of a sport and recreation leadership role..
    7) In-depth study of selected contemporary topics in sport and recreation, and how to develop and foster the rights and responsibilities of global citizenship within the sport, recreation and community services industries.

  • What courses will I take

    Students are required to complete 4 courses, each worth 3 credits, for a total of 12 credits. There are 6 courses to choose from.* Courses are offered online only and students will have up to 4 years to complete the certificate.

    *The nature and number of courses offered in a calendar year will vary. All 6 courses will not be offered each year.

  • What are the requirements

    - Eligible students will have an Undergraduate Degree, with a GPA of 3.0 (if you do not meet this, please contact the Manager, International and Community Education @ KSRCert@ualberta.ca) 

    - A minimum of 1 year related work experience.

    - A current curriculum vitae/resume.

    - A letter of intent.

    - One professional letter of reference 

  • How do I apply
    The certificate will begin taking applications in January 2019. Once you are admitted, you will begin your choice of course(s) in the following academic term in which it is offered. To be notified by email when applications are open or to receive more information regarding applications, please email KSRcert@ualberta.ca.
  • When do courses begin

    Courses will be offered in Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 semesters.

  • What is the cost
    Tuition is $6,400.00 to complete all four courses in the certificate, plus non-instructional fees. Each course is approximately $1,600.00 plus non-instructional fees.
  • Can I use this certificate for a course-based Master of Arts Degree
    This certificate can be laddered into a course-based Master of Arts degree program in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Completion of one or two certificates does not guarantee admission into a Master or other graduate programs. Prospective students will be required to apply and meet admission requirements of the specific Master program to which they are applying.
