About the Conference

ReCon is an annual graduate student retreat and conference that focuses on graduate student research and professional development. It covers topics relevant to students in all phases of their programs. Opportunities for students, staff, and professors to interact in a casual and supportive atmosphere abound. Whether students are new to the faculty or nearing the end of their programs, attendance at ReCon is an extremely valuable interdisciplinary experience that is a lot of fun!

Keynote Speakers

Each year at ReCon, an alumnus of the faculty will present a keynote address. The speaker will reflect on his or her experiences as a graduate student in our faculty, and how these experiences contributed to achieving career success.

This year, we are excited to announce Dr. Lisa Bélanger as our Alumni speaker.

Lisa received both her MSc and Ph.D. in Behavioural Medicine from the University of Alberta, Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. Dr. Bélanger is the CEO and founder of ConsciousWorks, a consulting firm that helps everyone from executives to entrepreneurs apply the findings from leading-edge scientific analyses to maximize their mental and physical well-being at work and at home.

Dr. Bélanger is also a Certified Exercise Physiologist; a past Honorary Research Associate at Swansea University, Wales; researcher and instructor at the University of Calgary; instructor at the University of Alberta Executive Education and the author of Inspire Me Well: Finding Motivation to Take Control of Your Health. Additionally, she is the founder of Knight's Cabin, a national non-profit offering no-cost wellness programming to cancer survivors.

Her fondest memory of her time at UofA was endless coffee and 'second at Leva and Transcend and runs breaks in the River Valley. Her most notable accomplishments are running the Paris marathon, climbing Kilimanjaro and creating a tiny human. You can find her working with her portable desk at the top of the mountain at home in Canmore, Alberta, or another corner of the world. When she is not working, she is most likely on her way to yoga, out for a run or taste testing the local coffee and wine.

Keynote address: The Science of How We Work

Graduate school is the ideal time to set up the habits for how you work, how you recover, and how you live. This is the time to create coping mechanisms for stress, to establish effective break strategies and start developing daily routines that create the optimal performance and sustainability. Drawing on psychology, neuroscience and behavioural medicine, this talk will present how to effectively design your day for your brain to function at its best, increase your energy and to continuously support your mental health as you begin or continue your graduate school journey at the University of Alberta.

Professional Development Sessions

Earn your Professional Development (PD) credits! Each year at ReCon you can work towards fulfilling your Professional Development program requirements by attending our scheduled PD sessions! No additional cost.

As per KSR graduate program requirements, all graduate students are to fulfill 8 hours of Professional Development activities consistent with their Individual Development Plan (IDP) - see link here for more details.

Outdoor Activities

Friday, September 7

  • Banff Co. Brewery Tours starting at 7:00 p.m.
    • Will be taking place during all-conference dinner social (included in dinner price at no additional charge

Saturday, September 8

  • Sulphur Mountain hike + gondola + Banff Hot Springs (additional costs apply)
    • Conference attendees can hike up the mountain, enjoy the views, then take the gondola down and enjoy some time in the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Other options include hiking up and down the mountain (free), taking the gondola up/down the mountain (additional cost), or foregoing the mountain and enjoying the hot springs (additional cost)
    • Difficulty level: Easy-moderate (walking uphill for duration of hike)
    • Hike duration: 2 hours to summit (up to an hour at summit and 1 hour at hot springs = ~4-5 hours)
    • Bus will depart Banff Center for Banff Hot Springs at 1:00pm
    • Bus will depart Banff Hot Springs back to Banff Center at 5:00pm
    • Cost: ~$35/person for gondola ride down (one-way) (~$65 to ride gondola up AND down)
      ~$11.80/person for hot springs (Entry: $9.90/person which includes a locker token, $1.90 additional for a towel).

Dining Arrangements

Friday, September 7:

  • The all-conference dinner social will take place at Banff Brewing Co. in Banff at 7:00 p.m.
  • Delegates are responsible for paying for their own meals ($25 + GST and gratuity)
  • This year will feature a build-your-own burger bar!
    • Vegetarian, non-dairy and gluten-free options will be accommodated

Saturday, September 8:

  • The conference gala will take place at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity
    • Dress code: semi-formal
  • The dinner is included with registration. However, delegates will be responsible for their own beverages
    • Non-delegates are also invited to attend the gala. If you wish to bring a guest, tickets are $40. Payment can be made via e-transfer to VP ReCon Julienne Cancio at by August 1.

The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

Accommodations (queen-sized beds; i.e., 1 bedded room = 1 queen size bed; 2 bedded room = 2 queen size beds)

We have secured special room rates for ReCon IX attendees with the following room prices below:

  • One-bedded room = $200.00 + taxes
  • Two-bedded room = $220.00 + taxes
  • Extra occupancy = $20/person

If you have more people sharing your room it will be an extra $20 per person per night (max 4 people per room). Anyone wishing to stay before and after the conference nights (September 6 and 7) will receive the same conference rate as long as rooms are available. Abstract Submission

Presenting at ReCon is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your research and get valuable feedback from professors and students from the Faculty. It is also a great way to sharpen your presentation skills before presenting at larger conferences, submitting for publication, or preparing for an oral exam. Even if you have presented the paper at a conference prior to ReCon, there will be many people in the crowd for whom it will be 'new'.

Abstracts from all research areas are welcomed and students are encouraged to submit abstracts for all types of projects, including (but not limited to) proposals, works-in-progress, and finished projects. For example, course-based Master's students can present their capping project or a project for a class, while Coaching Master's students may present work that they have done with an athletic team.

All student abstracts are accepted!

Abstract submission guideline:

  • Abstract submissions will be open from May 1 to August 15, 2019
  • Length of abstract: maximum 300 words, plus the maximum one page of Figures and/or Tables, another one page of references (optional), and 3 keywords
  • Submission format: Microsoft Office Word file
  • Deadline: August 15, 2019

Presentation formats:

  • 7-minute oral presentation
  • 5-minute oral presentation
  • PechaKucha (20 x 20)
  • 3M (3-minute) thesis
  • Poster presentation
  • Alternative presentation*

* Anything including dance, video/film, activity, and live experiment. Be creative!
