Title: "I wish I didn't have to grow potatoes": Provisional Authority, Limits of the State, and Police Work in Ukraine

This year Ivan conducted a 5-month long ethnography in Ukraine, first-handedly observing work and daily routines of police officers in one of the cities. He was specifically interested to understand professional experiences common to police officers in Ukraine as well as to hear their reflections on the work that they do.In his presentation, Ivan analyzes police work in Ukraine as the phenomenon deeply embedded in local contexts and global discourses about Ukraine, post-Soviet space, and the role of the police in a Modern society. Ivan is finishing his master's program at the Department of Anthropology, University of Alberta.
