Medical Biochemistry is the discipline that enables the measurement and pathophysiologic correlation of diverse and virtually unlimited constituents of the blood, urine and other body fluids.  At the University of Alberta Hospital, Medical Biochemistry is divided into high volume, rapid response chemistry testing (Core Laboratory) and more specialized testing that includes endocrinologic, immunologic, esoteric therapeutic drug management and clinical toxicology testing as well as prenatal and neonatal screening.  Like the discipline of medical biochemistry, its senior staff have diverse skills and interests.   All engage laboratory assay development, optimization and evaluation.  Specialty areas include quality assurance, quality control and point of care testing (Dr. George Cembrowski), endocrinology and tumor marker testing (Dr. Connie Prosser), pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and drug abuse (Dr. Don LeGatt), pediatric and prenatal chemistry (Dr. Fiona Bamforth).  We contribute to training of residents in General Pathology and education of students enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Science program as well as medical and dental students.
