  • ​This is a comprehensive program providing experiences in all facets of laboratory services from private facilities to university-based facilities. The regional health care model of delivery provides all residents access to a broad range of tests and specimens.
  • Opportunities for interprovincial and international electives are available. Short international electives can be arranged on an ad hoc basis and must conform to RCPSC regulations. Canadian electives have been taken in Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto, as well as at a number of smaller centres in Alberta . All electives must be approved in advance by the program director and have established educational goals and objectives.
  • There are no mandatory rural rotations.
  • Ratio of residents to faculty is 1:5.
  • Our institution provides residents with access to electronic medical resources.
  • Research is actively encouraged in both programs, and research electives (ranging from three to twelve months) are available for all residents. All residents are expected to participate in at least one clinical or basic science project, and to present their results at an annual departmental resident research day and, when appropriate, at a national or international meeting during the course of their training.
