Admissions Process and Deadlines

To be considered for the LLM or the PhD program, applicants must complete the following application process:

  1. Initiate online application. The application and declaration must be completed, and the application fee paid, by December 1st.

  2. Upload the following Academic Documentation to the application by December 1st:

    1. Copies of all transcripts (marksheets) from ALL post-secondary institutions (including undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate) in the official language of instruction. Include translations if applicable.

      * Official documents (transcripts, degree certificates, etc.) may be required upon receiving the conditional offer of admission letter. Documents must be sent directly from the post-secondary institution to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research office.

    2. If English is not your first language you must meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement.

      • TOEFL: Minimum score of 600 (paper-based) or a total score of 100 with a score of at least 25 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based)

      • IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall band score of 7.0, with at least 5 on each band

      • PTE (Academic): overall minimum score of 68

  3. Upload the following Supplemental Documentation to the application by December 1st:

    1. Chronological resume or curriculum vitae describing your academic history, scholarly achievements, awards, publications, employment history and any other information which you feel would be relevant to our assessment of your application.

    2. Three (3) reference forms and letters of recommendation completed and submitted by the referees. The reference forms and letters must be uploaded by the referee to the online application.

    3. A Statement of Motivation. Please follow the Statement of Motivation Instruction Form.

    4. Your Research Proposal, as follows:

      1. Applicants for Course-Based LLM Program (major paper requirement): provide a one-page proposal describing the topic of your major paper;

      2. Applicants for Thesis-Based LLM program (written thesis requirement): provide a two to five page description of your proposed thesis research, including the legal issue(s) involved, your preliminary arguments, and the analytical approach you plan to take. Your proposal must be supported by footnote references;

      3. Applicants for PhD Program (written dissertation requirement): provide a five to ten page description of your proposed dissertation research, including the legal issue(s) involved, your preliminary arguments, and the analytical methods you plan to use. Your proposal must be supported by footnote references.
