First and only University of Alberta Law Alumnus to be elected to the Legislature of Alberta as a New Democrat.
Over the last 35 years Barrie has been actively involved in the development of labour law in the province of Alberta.
He represents trade unions in the public and private sectors.
He represents clients in Alberta,
the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
- 1968 - Graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Alberta
- 1973 – He was a founding partner of the law firm Wright, Chivers & Co and practiced primarily in criminal and labour law.
- 1987 - Along with Sheila Greckol he established the boutique labour firm Chivers-Greckol, now Chivers Carpenter. Barrie practices exclusively in labour, employment and human rights law.
Barrie represents a broad cross section of trade unions in the public and private sectors. His clients include numerous labour organizations representing firefighters, teachers and educators, municipal workers, food and service workers and maintenance workers. He serves as Parliamentarian and Constitutional and legislative advisor to the United Nurses of Alberta.
- 1990 – 1993 – MLA for Edmonton Strathcona, New Democrat. He was the Official Opposition critic for the Attorney General, Solicitor General, Consumer and Corporate Affairs and Native Affairs portfolios
