Karan Shaner was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister with the Northwest Territories Department of Justice in 2008.
In 2011 Karen was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories.
She is the First University of Law Graduate to hold these two positions.
1990 - Graduated in Law from the University of Alberta
1991 – Admitted to the Northwest Territories Bar
1991 – 1996 – She was an associate with Johnson, Gullberg, Wiest and MacPherson (now Lawson, Lundell)
1996 – 1999 & 2001 – 2003 Legal Counsel for the Northwest Territories Department of Justice.
2003 – 2007 Served as Director of the Legal Division
2008 – 2011- Assistant Deputy Minister with the Northwest Territories
2011 – present – Appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories
In addition to her management roles, her main areas of practice were labour law, human rights, administrative law and general litigation.
Since 2007 she has been a coach with the Learn to Skate program of the Yellowknife Speed Skating Club since 2007. She has been active in various clubs such as Aurora Minor Soccer, Great Slave Skating Centre and Yellowknife Minor Hockey.

She has a very strong commitment to family law and has done a lot of work over the last few years in the department in terms of legal aid systems and making access to justice easier and helping people who may have difficulties entering the justice system. She is very committed to an open, accessible justice system.
