Jean McBean

Jean McBean’s legal firm was the first all female Law firm in Edmonton

1948 – 2012

  • 1972 - Graduated with distinction from University of Alberta Faculty of Law.
  • 1973 - 1979 articled with the firm Wright, Chivers & Company, and was invited to become partner
  • 1979 – 2001 – established a private law practice first as a sole practioner then later joined by new partners which eventually became called McBean Becker Cochard and Gordon
  • Firm specialized in Family Law and was on the cutting edge of major social change in the area of family law, during an era when the battle for women’s equality was transforming divorce, child custody and rules for sharing property after marriage break ups
  • 1985 - Completed professional mediation training offered by the New Family Centre
  • 1986 - Recipient of a Viscount Bennett Fellowship which enabled her to obtain a Master of Laws Degree from McGill University
  • 2001 – 2003 established a Legal Aid office for Family Law in both Edmonton and Calgary after being approached by the Family Law, the Legal Aid Society of Alberta
  • 2003 – 2006 returned to private practice before retiring


  • 1988 – Appointed Queen’s Counsel by the Province of Alberta
  • 1999 – 2001 Appointed as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta
  • 2012 – Awarded the Alumni Honour Award by the University of Alberta
