Academic Resources

The Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta is a leader in the use of technology in the classroom. From smart classrooms to online course delivery, we take full advantage of available technological resources.

General Requirements:

  • Security cable

  • Full administrative control over your laptop (required for laptop exams).
  • Network connection and/or working USB port.
  • All Apple Macintosh computers must have a working AirPort.
  • One of the following operating systems or greater:
    • Windows 8.1
    • Windows 8
    • Windows 7
    • Windows Vista
    • Apple OS X 10.9 "Mavericks"
    • Apple OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"
    • Apple OS X 10.7 "Lion"
    • Apple OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard"
  • A backup system such as a USB memory key, external hard drive or net drive. Do not rely on a single location for storage of your data. At the very least, you can use your webmail account (i.e. emailing yourself,) as a form of backup for specific files. Always make sure to follow the safe removal/ejection process for your device, to avoid having its files or file-system corrupted.

Note regarding data recovery: USB keys can fail unexpectedly, and depending on the nature of the failure, can be very difficult to recover data from. Physical hard drives (HDDs) fail less often than flash (USB) memory and are easier to recover data from, though the recovery process can be very costly. Basic file recovery can be performed with Piriform's Recuva (free), physical hard drive problems can often be repaired with HDD Regenerator which can very often save you $800 - $1500 on physical data recovery at a lab, and RescueData is a good local lab for data recovery, here in Edmonton.  Rescue Data is provided UAlberta Law students, staff, sessionals and alumni with highly discounted rates, so if you need to use them, mention that Tim Young from UAlberta Law referred you.

University Wireless Service (UWS)

Wireless Internet access is available on campus via UWS. Access to UWS requires your campus computing ID (CCID) and password, and requires your computer's wireless to support WPA2 Enterprise (with AES). Usually installing all available Windows/system updates will ensure this support. Please click here for instructions on how to connect to the UWS. Two popular Internet service providers for home use are Shaw Cable and Telus ADSL.

Common resources accessible from home:

Academic Information & Communication Technologies (AICT) provides a large amount of general software, freely available to students.

Extegrity Exam4 is used for exams written on computer. Please ensure that your computer is compatible with Exam4 by accessing their system requirements section of their FAQ.

Our faculty uses Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.

Software is also available at the Microstore, on the main floor of SUB.

Shared Printing

All student printing requires a OneCard, and is done via the campus computer labs. Click here for further instruction on printing in the labs. No wireless printing is currently available.

Time Server Synchronization (important for registration/Bear Tracks)

Due to the time restrictions placed on registration, it is important to synchronize your computer's clock with the university's central time server, and thus with Bear Tracks.

For Mac systems:

  1. go into "System Preferences"

  2. then into "Date & Time"

  3. click the checkbox to "Set date & time automatically"

  4. manually type in into the box to the right. Note that it won't automatically appear in the list of servers.

  5. press [enter]

For Windows systems:

  1. right-click on the clock in the system notification area (aka system tray)

  2. click "Adjust date/time"

  3. click the "Internet Time" tab

  4. click "Change Settings" (if you're in a version higher than XP)

  5. click the checkbox to "Synchronize with an Internet time server"

  6. manually type in into the "Server" box. Note that it won't automatically appear in the list of servers.

  7. click "Update now" and wait for the synchronization process to finish. (If it fails, repeat this step.)

  8. click "OK"

  9. click the final "OK" button
