Studying Abroad

Our students’ legal education is no longer confined within the boundaries of the University of Alberta or the Province of Alberta. University of Alberta law students increasingly have been seeking to enhance their academic and personal experiences through study abroad and exchange programs. “Studying abroad” involves customized arrangements with other law faculties, pursuant to a UofA “letter of permission.” Students pay host school fees. “Exchanges” are based on formal agreements between Universities. Students pay “home school” (UofA) fees. Since 2000, UofA law students have studied all over the world while earning credit towards their J.D. degree.

The number of international students hosted by the Faculty has also been increasing. Since 2000, students have come to University of Alberta Law from Australia, Brazil, Colombia, France, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and New Zealand. These students are welcomed to the Faculty through an Orientation program that includes an overview of common law, an introduction to the library and Canadian legal research techniques, and assignment to an upper-year student liaison.

Sussi, a recent exchange student from Copenhagen made the following comment about her experience at the UofA:

"I studied for one semester at the UofA, Faculty of Law. It has been a fantastic semester with very interesting and useful classes and very dedicated professors. UofA and the Law Centre is a perfect institution for international students, and it really gave me a lot of opportunities to explore the Canadian law from a Canadian and international angle".

International experience information is constantly changing as both the UofA and the Faculty pursue new international opportunities. Students can learn about international opportunities by visiting the Education Abroad Program office in HUB, by visiting www.international.ualberta.ca, or by visiting our exchange programs page.
