Clinical faculty members are vital to the function of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) at the University of Alberta. With nearly 1,600 members in the faculty, they comprise over 75 per cent of educators in the FoMD.
Clinical faculty members practice in hospital and clinical sites throughout Alberta and the Yukon. They represent a variety of medical specialties and subspecialties, and offer opportunities for medical students to truly experience each respective specialty. As volunteer educators, they lend a component of clinical engagement to the health-care programs at the University of Alberta.
Despite the pressures of a busy practice, they often voice different reasons for continuing to teach:
- It’s the old adage—see one, do one, teach one
- It keeps them up-to-date with medical and dental advancements
- It’s a way to show future health-care professionals what medicine or dentistry is like
- It’s fun and enjoyable
