Leaders achieve transformative results by leading others to advance programs, initiatives, and/or groups. Examples include leaders of education committees, clerkships and courses, research groups, clinical working groups, training and professional development programs, and decanal positions. Leadership involves particular forms of integrative and applicatory scholarship which can be transparently and effectively planned, reported and assessed for their quality, quantity and success. Our faculty has developed a basic rubric to help guide such planning and assessment.
Successful leadership and administration also require particular knowledge and skill sets. The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry hosts courses and workshops series to provide such knowledge and skills:

Gold Academic Leadership Development Program
The GOLD - Academic Leadership Development Program is a comprehensive learning program sponsored by the Office of the Provost and VP (Academic) in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and Organizational Learning and Effectiveness. Developing and enhancing leadership capacity within the academy is strongly supported and a required strategic element in driving us forward to the universities’ shared vision. The program is comprised of ten modules as well as Orientation and Graduation. Each session has been designed to address key areas of academic leadership within the University of Alberta context. We realize that scheduling time to participate in all of the sessions may be a challenge; however, it is very important that participants attend all of the sessions. Consequently we would require a signed commitment from you and your supervisor which represents a shared awareness and understanding of the respective efforts required to be successful in the is program.
The Program is largely subsidized by the Office of the Provost and VP (Academic), the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and Organizational Learning and Effectiveness (OLE), but there is a registration fee required of each participant.
This program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Maintenance of Certification Program and accreditation points may be earned.
