Li-Kwong Cheah, MBA

Li-Kwong CheahLi-Kwong Cheah holds an MBA with more than 9 years of rexperience working in higher education in senior managemen roles. Prior to joining the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, Cheah was the director of Finance & Business Operations at Osgoode Professional Developments, a division of Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. He has previously worked for the University of Alberta, first as the assistant dean of Finance and Administration at Augustana campus, and then as senior financial officer, Learning Services at the North campus. There, he worked closely with the senior leadership team to implement the strategic plan and achieve the goals of the Learning Services portfolio. He also oversaw endowment funds, research funds and donations for University Libraries. He has been a member of several campus-wide committees, including the RCM budgeting working group, the Finance Management Committee, and the General Faculties Council.

Cheah is an accomplished business professional with significant experience in finance and operations, including budgeting, strategic planning, business transformation and process improvement. He has been recognized for his strong communication, collaborative and human resource management skills, providing cohesive operational support to universities and the private sector.

Role of Director of Finance and Senior Financial Officer

Main Accountabilities

  • Overall responsibility for providing strategic financial leadership for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
  • Lead the faculty on financial planning, budgeting and forecasting, ensuring that there is effective overall management and internal controls of all financial matters.
  • Evaluating and improving the faculty's financial risk management, internal control and financial processes.
  • Participating on the faculty's key strategic committees as well as representing the faculty on certain University and government committees, and institutional wide strategies, programs, and services.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Finance and Information Management teams, including information technology related to the faculty's administrative systems and the joint relationship with AHS.
  • Oversee all financial aspects of space planning.
