About Me

Personal Statement

My major interests are in echocardiography, medical education and global health. I am passionate about learning and enjoy working in a team to improve patient care.  My recent interest is in palliative care and improving symptom management in heart failure.

Bibiana Cujec is a cardiologist and professor of medicine at the University of Alberta. She obtained her MD from Laval University (1981) and a master’s degree in adult education from the University of Saskatchewan (1997). Following her cardiology training, Dr. Cujec joined the Cardiology Division at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and became associate professor of medicine. She joined the Division of Cardiology at the University of Alberta in 1997, becoming full professor in 2008. Dr. Cujec has been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education for the past 25 years, with a growing focus in international medical training.  She is currently the director for level 1 and level 2 echocardiography training at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

Leadership and Collaborations

Dr. Cujec is a member of Academics Without Borders. She has served as cardiology residency program director and examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada while at the University of Saskatchewan and undergraduate cardiology block coordinator and internal medicine clerkship coordinator at the University of Alberta. She is past-president of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Academy. She is a current member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Area of Focused Competency in Echocardiography committee.


Dr. Cujec has been involved in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education. In 2010 she began contributing to the development of the undergraduate cardiology curriculum at the Patan Academy of Health Sciences in Nepal and in 2015 performed a needs assessment for a cardiology training program at Mekelle University in Ethiopia with Academics without Borders.

Dr. Cujec has won several awards for her teaching excellence, including Cardiology Lecturer and Cardiology Teacher of the Year, and Discovery Learning Preceptor Excellence Award. In 2008 she received a Best Doctors in Canada and in 2009 the Canadian Society of Echocardiography Achievement Award.


Dr. Cujec is a reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Cardiology and is a member of its editorial board. Her research projects and funding include:

  • Medtronic Mosaic Valve Study. Co-Investigator for Saskatoon, 1994-1995. $20,000.00
  • Nitric oxide in patients with heart failure. Co-Investigator. Saskatchewan Lung Association. Grant applicants: T. Hurst, D. Johnson. 1995-1996. $20,000.00 
  • ASTRONOMER study, Statin therapy in of aortic stenosis. CIHR/Astra Zeneca funded. Co-investigator, Grant applicants: Dr. Kwan Chan, Dr. Koon Teo 2002-2009
