About Me

Personal Statement

Sharing knowledge with trainees is an important aspect of medicine that I enjoy and find challenging. When I was training in cardiology, I had some excellent teachers who put in tremendous hours. I feel that I owe it to students to help them achieve their best.  When I see them a few years later, on my wards, they have the training and understanding of patient-centred care to do well.

Dr. Sonnenberg completed his internal medicine residency and specialty training in Echocardiology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Brian Sonnenberg is highly regarded by his patients for his care, compassion and knowledge. His gift for medical education is renowned among trainees and colleagues. He is a highly awarded clinician and medical educator.

Teaching

Dr. Sonnenberg is involved at all levels of medical education, from teaching the cardiology block to undergraduate medical students and to delivering subspecialty echo training to medical fellows. He has received numerous accolades for his teaching and medical education contributions. He received Block of the Year and Teaching Excellence awards in 2015 from the Medical Students’ Association and Teacher of the Year and Block of the Year awards from the class of 2016. In 2018, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit for teaching excellence from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Canadian Association for Medical Education’s Merit Award for his contributions to medical education.
