About Me

Dr. Tarumi earned her medical degree in 1991 from the Sapporo Medical University, fulfilled residencies in anesthesiology from 1991 to 1994 at the Sapporo Medical University in Japan. She further underwent a clinical fellowship in internal medicine, and then worked as an attending physician at the palliative care unit, Higashi Sapporo Hospital till 1999.  She has earned a PhD through the Department of Anesthesiology, Saporo Medical University in 2013.

Dr. Tarumi completed a Clinical Research Fellowship in the Division of Palliative Care Medicine, Department of Oncology, University of Alberta from 1999 to June 2002. She has worked as: a community consultant in the Capital Health Regional Palliative Care Program from 2002 through to May 2006; the Director of the Palliative Care Consult Program at the Royal Alexandra Hospital from June 2006 through to October 2016; and from November 2016 is currently a staff consultant for the Symptom Control and Palliative Care Program at the Cross Cancer Institute.

She has had a longstanding interest in palliative care and pain management and has published on subjects such as management of cancer pain in older adults, ethics in palliative care, opioid use for pain control and educational issues in palliative medicine in Canada and Japan.



Dr. Tarumi presently teaches Pain and Symptom Management: Bone Pain & Breakthrough Pain and Pain and Symptom Management: Palliative Sedation in the Seminar Series to the Palliative Medicine Residents.
