Striving to teach the best of what is known, we refer learners to exemplary textbooks, chapters, review articles or research reports; each unique in the way knowledge is discovered, organized, explained, summarized or shared. This uniqueness constitutes an original contribution and is considered the “intellectual property” of resource authors. We benefit from authors’ contributions because they assign their rights to publishers who charge fees to distribute property in a sustainable way.
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) initiated the Homer Copyright Optimization Project with the goal of appraising the potential impact of the university opting out of an Access Copyright agreement. This project was facilitated by the Homer e-Learning team.
The project examined prevailing intellectual property protection policies and processes, ensured compliance of all current online course offerings within the Homer Learning Community and developed optimized policies, procedures and processes. The team worked closely with the library to develop easy-to-use deep-linking technologies within the Homer Learning Community system that meet the guidelines of the university's Copyright and Licensing Office.
When including intellectual property in course packs, online readings, reference lists or case-based instruction, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry complies with the Copyright Act and related laws.
