Forming a new Group, Centre or Institute

Interested in Establishing a New Research Group, Centre or Institute in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry?

The use of the term "group", "centre" and "institute" is limited by approval processes that are in place at the faculty and university level. If you are interested in establishing a new research group, centre or institute please submit a brief summary (one page or less) of the objectives of this unit with information on the proposed membership (approximate numbers of faculty members, whether it includes members from other faculties, etc.) and linkage/relationship with other groups, centres or institutes at the University of Alberta (and elsewhere if appropriate). This will initially be reviewed by the Vice Dean, Research.

Research Groups

The purpose of research groups is to develop research capacity in a focused area of cutting-edge research. The group's objectives must focus on developing research capacity for faculty, and include graduate students/postdoctoral fellows/clinical research fellows. All groups must submit an annual report on group activities to the Vice-Dean, Research via the Office of Research.

The Faculty currently provides up to $5,000 annual funding to recognized groups. This funding is to be used for such group-related activities as seminar series, annual retreats, trainee conference travel prizes, website and other communication materials, etc. It is not to be used for general hospitality costs, gifts, stand-alone social functions, or non-trainee travel expenses. Groups are encouraged to use other programs such as the FoMD Walter Mackenzie Visiting Speaker Fund to support the majority of costs for visiting speakers.

All groupings of faculty members that wish to be recognized as a "research group" require approval by the FoMD Faculty Research Committee (FRC).

Centres and Institutes

All groupings of faculty members that wish to be recognized as a "research centre" or "research institute" require approval by the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). As noted on UAPPOL, " the use of the words "Centre" and "Institute" are reserved by GFC (General Faculties Council), therefore, initiatives shall not sure these words in public documentation prior to receipt of notice of approval." Any centre or institute operating without such approval risk closure by the university. Further information is available at UAPPOL.
