The Department of Oncology would like to congratulate Dr. Vickie Baracos, Professor and Alberta Cancer Foundation Chair in Palliative Care Medicine on the recent award of a prestigious CIHR Foundation Award, one of two awarded to the University of Alberta during the 2017/18 academic year. Only 36 CIHR Foundation grant applications were funded from 303 submissions. This seven year grant awarded to Dr. Baracos was funded to $1,642,998 and is titled: "Cachexia, the last illness: Translational research on mechanisms, diagnostic criteria and clinical management". We are very proud of Vickie and her substantial contributions to the Division of Palliative Care Medicine, the Department of Oncology, CRINA (the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta), the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and also to members of the Faculty of ALES who are her longstanding collaborators.
