Residents

General Surgery is charged not only with the responsibility of training its own 41 residents, the Division also provides surgical experience for otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Urology, Cardiac, Plastics, Neurosurgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology residents. The Division provides basic clinical training in the areas of Radiation Oncology, Anaesthesia, Emergency, Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology and Anatomic Pathology and provides a month-long surgical experience for 49 Family Practice residents.

The objectives of Residency training are achieved through the five-year Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program at the University of Alberta. The mission of the surgical training program is to provide individuals with a firm knowledge base as well as the clinical and technical skills necessary to practice the discipline of General Surgery. Upon completion of this training program, the trainee will have obtained the necessary prerequisites set by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for certification in General Surgery.

PGME activities of the Division of General Surgery are maintained through the Office of Surgical Education (OSE).
