Financial Assistance


The Department of Surgery requires a minimum student stipend of $20,000 plus tuition costs for all individuals enrolled in our graduate program.

Funding is typically from the supervisor’s operating grants, departmental assistance or external awards and scholarships. All students are encouraged to seek external funding where possible.

Clinical residents in our faculty have the opportunity to apply for the Clinical Investigator Program (CIP) for salary support. The CIP is a two year program offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry to complete an MSc and is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as part of their residency programs.

The CIP program is intended to improve the competitiveness for external training awards and aid in the recruitment of high quality junior faculty into an academic department.

Graduate Student Travel Award

This departmental award is available for basic science graduate students traveling to present at conferences.

The Department of Surgery will pay up to a maximum of $1,000 towards allowable travel expenses. The student is required to complete the application form and submit it to the graduate program administrator for approval by the Department of Surgery Research Committee.

Submission deadlines are March 1 and September 1.
