This has been a wonderful year for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, earmarked by celebrations of educational excellence, scientific discoveries and clinical care of the highest standard. In 2014, the faculty celebrated full accreditations for the MD program, all three dental programs and the medical laboratory science program; we were honoured to add one more 3M National Teaching Fellow to our faculty and we welcomed many new students and residents into our educational programs.

  • Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry a champion of educational excellence

    The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has marked the close of its centennial year with a major achievement. The Faculty has been profiled in a publication of the Cambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) entitled CUSU Strategies for Success 2013. The book is subtitled Employers, education, excellence & careers and includes profiles of "specially selected national and international educational institutions."

    Canadian Medical Association recognized Rhodes Scholar Peter Gill's commitment to pediatric medicine. Gill co-founded PedsCases, an educational website that addresses the knowledge gap between the classroom and clerkship, earning him the CMA's Student Award for Young Leaders.

    About 80 per cent of all donated hearts are too weak or damaged to ever be used in the approximately 175 heart transplants done in Canada each year. But new research at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, which won the single largest award in the history of the University Hospital Foundation, aims to save more hearts, which will save more lives.
