Faculty Recognition


The Faculty is pleased to congratulate Carol Cass, professor emerita, Department of Oncology, and Cyril Kay, professor emeritus, Department of Biochemistry, on being recognized with University of Alberta honorary degrees.


Vincent Agyapong, Department of Psychiatry, was recognized with the 2019 Research/Clinician Momentum Mental Health Award.


Alika Lafontaine, Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, was awarded the Canadian Medical Association Sir Charles Tupper Award for Political Action.


J.N. Armstrong, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, received a STARS Ambulance gold and diamond medallion for 20 years of service as a flight physician.


Douglas Zochodne and Eva Feldman, Department of Medicine, were awarded the Alan J. Gebhart Prize for Excellence in Peripheral Nerve Research from the Peripheral Nerve Society.


Congratulations to William Branton, senior technician in Christopher Power's lab, on receiving the U of A's 2019 Nat Rutter Outstanding Technician Award.


Mehaboob Shariff Shaik, Department of Pediatrics, has won a HQCA Patient Experience Award for his work connecting moms and babies in the NICU via iPad. Read more.


Loretta Fiorillo, Department of Pediatrics, received the 2019 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and the Gold Humanism Honors Society. This annual award is given to one faculty member who exemplifies outstanding humanism in medicine.


Karen Madsen, Department of Medicine, was awarded the Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology.


David Evans, Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, received the Gertrude Elion Memorial Award from the International Society for Antiviral Research.


School of Dentistry

Students, Residents and Trainees

MD student Alex Wong is the recipient of the 2019 CFMS-MD Financial Leadership Award.


Malcolm Laraque, '18 BScRdThpy, earned the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Therapists (CAMRT) Award of Excellence for Radiation Therapy, for scoring the highest marks in Canada for all three 2018 sittings (January, May, and September) of the national CAMRT Radiation Therapy Certification Examination.


Amy Kirkham, Department of Biomedical Engineering, is the recipient of a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship.


Christopher Cromwell, Department of Pharmacology, Annette Hernandez Abad, Department of Physiology, and Alexander Szojka, Department of Surgery, are the recipients of NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Doctoral Scholarships.


Garett Dunsmore, MSc student, and Shima Shahbaz, PhD student (supervisor: Shokrollah Elahi), won best poster presentation awards at the Canadian Society for Immunology meeting in Banff April 9-12, 2019.


Nawell Fayad, (Supervisor Paige Lacy) was awarded an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master's Program (CGSM) graduate student award.


Sarah Almas, (Supervisor Paige Lacy) received an Alberta Innovates Summer Research Studentship.


Ojas Srivastava, (Supervisor Paige Lacy) was awarded an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) Studentship.


Rayven Snodgrass, Resident, Department of Psychiatry, won the Grey Nuns Hospital Emergency Medicine top ER resident for 2018-2019.


Congratulations to MedStar Graduate Prize winner Bruno Saleme, Department of Medicine (Supervisor Gopi Sutendra).
