What initially drew you to this area of study?

I had an early interest in primary care and having grown up in Fort McMurray, I always wanted to serve and advocate for underrepresented and underserved populations in Canada. Becoming a physician allows me to do this while also working in an evolving and dynamic field that emphasizes teamwork and leadership.

What achievement, accomplishment or moment are you most proud of from your time in the program?

I had the wonderful opportunity to work on a medical education project evaluating the effectiveness of rubrics in increasing discussions regarding inequities and barriers to health care for Alberta's people among medical students. As an immigrant who grew up in a rural town, I have witnessed many of these barriers firsthand. It was heartwarming to see the students are increasingly more aware of these issues and ready to take on the challenges of breaking such barriers down.

What was the biggest challenge you faced?

Having to do medical school during the pandemic. Being away from my classmates and without clinical experience was difficult. My class was creative at coming up with ways to stay connected, which was amazing to see!

How did you stay motivated and who helped you keep going when things got tough?

Balance is key to staying motivated, so I make sure to carve out time to relax, connect with friends and family and recharge. Something small that always cheered me up was taking a walk on the beautiful river valley trails!

What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering this program of study/specialization?

Take the time to explore all your options and pay attention to what truly makes your heart sing! Medical specialties are vast and varied and there is something out there for everyone.

What have you learned about yourself, and how will you use this going forward?

I have gained insight into how powerful being a good listener can be and it is something that has helped me many times to talk to and connect with patients, families and also with my team members. It is a small but mighty tool for a physician!

What comes next for you in your career/academic journey?

I'm thrilled to be starting my pediatrics residency at McMaster University in Hamilton!
