Cultural Safety and Anti-Racism

Medical schools will add a prerequisite for consideration of admission for all candidates in Indigenous studies, cultural safety, anti-racism or related discipline.

  1. In 2019, the MD Program implemented the new requirement that all incoming students to the program must complete the Indigenous Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) as a foundation for learning in Indigenous Health. The Indigenous MOOC was developed by the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta and explores Indigenous histories and contemporary issues in Canada.

From an Indigenous perspective, this course explores key issues facing Indigenous peoples today from a historical and critical perspective highlighting national and local Indigenous-settler relations.

Our future

The Division of Community Engagement's Indigenous Health Initiatives Program is in the process of co-creating/developing a Cultural Safety, Trauma-Informed Care and Anti-Racism course and will be made available to all students, faculty and staff across all five programs in the FoMD.

Funding to support this initiative is provided by the Government of Alberta's Anti-Racism Community Grant Program.
