Global Medical Summer Program

The Global Medical Sciences Program is a rich four (4)-week academic medical program for medical and health science students from international universities, offered by the Office of International Programs, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Global Medical Sciences Program has been postponed until winter, with a tentative start date of January 2021. This date is subject to change based on local and global restrictions.


Program Objectives

  • Interactive medical course in a unique format
  • Meaningful exposure to the Canadian health-care system, including hospital, family medicine and clinical medical practices
  • Learning about Canadian society and culture
  • Meeting friends overseas with different cultural backgrounds

 Program Curriculum

  • Welcome dinner and faculty appreciation dinner
  • Presentations about current topics in North American medical education
  • Small group discussions
  • Lab tours
  • Mini Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
  • Opportunity for clinical observership
  • Physical exam sessions

Program Requirements

  • Limited to medical and other health sciences related students (dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, etc.) as recommended by host institution
  • Students may be in any year of their medical or health sciences program

 Program Fees

The program fee of CAD $5,000 per trainee includes:

  • Tuition and course materials
  • Medical insurance
  • Shared accommodation for four (4) weeks
  • Group airport transfer and city tours
  • Orientation and farewell events

Optional Social Activities (Rocky Mountain Trip) available for additional fees.
