CaRMS Preparation Workshop (Careers in Medicine)
The Careers in Medicine course is offered to all Year 1 MD students in December. The course provides a framework for decision-making, a reference of all specialties available in Canada and an ongoing method for evaluating one's own rotations and experiences as a student intern.
Careers in Medicine Website (Students)
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has a website called Careers in Medicine to assist students in choosing a specialty and plan for residency.
To access the site, go to https://www.aamc.org/cim and click on the "Login" button on the left menu bar. If you are new to the site, you will need to register. Click on the "Register" button and enter your one-time access code. This access code is emailed to you in the fall of Year 1 by AAMC.
AAMC updated the website with a few enhancements. The changes include:
- An instrument called the Physician Values in Practice Scale (PVIPS). The PVIPS provides a quick and reliable measure of your values related to the practice of medicine. The PVIPS helps you to identify your core values in terms of what is most important to you about being a physician, and what you most want from your medical career.
- Updated and reorganized items for the Environmental Factors and Practice Needs assessments.
- A new item list and instructions for the skills assessments, making them shorter and more relevant to the medical field.
- An enhanced user registration, adding a class year designation, a medical school search function and an informed consent statement.
There are also some minor changes to the look and navigation of the site for easier use.
It is suggested that students complete the following areas of the AAMC Careers in Medicine website prior to formal career counselling with an adviser.
