MD Program

Research Opportunities

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is home to some of the top medical researchers in the world in their respective fields.

A number of exciting options are available to students looking to become physician-scientists:

  • The MD/PhD program allows students to take a leave of absence after Year 2 to complete their PhD, then return to finish Years 3 and 4 of their MD degree.
  • The MD with Special Training in Research (STIR) program gives students a taste of academic medicine. Once accepted, students complete a minimum of 24 weeks in either basic or clinical research under faculty supervision.
  • The Summer Students Research Program provides opportunities for undergraduate medical students to work with faculty members on clinical and basic-science research projects throughout the summer.
