Important Things to Know

Address Changes

It is very important for the UME Office to have a student's current address/phone numbers. Students are responsible for making changes to these on Bear Tracks, as well as emailing the UME Office to change the information on MedSIS.

Also, please note that all email correspondence from the university, the UME Office and rotation administrators will be sent to a student's university email account. Students should check their email often, as this is the preferred form of communication​.


Pagers will only be given to students starting their third year and will be distributed during link course. The student will continue to use the same pager until graduation and into residency, if the residency is at the University of Alberta. The rent on these pagers is paid for jointly by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Alberta Health Services.

A $50.00 replacement fee shall be paid by the student if the pager is lost or stolen. Students will be given the same style pager whenever possible, or if this is not possible, a pager of similar style will be given. The new pager will be programmed with the pager number that had been originally assigned to the student. The student should contact the UME Office with the new cap code of the new pager.

Distribution & Returns

Initial acquisitions of pagers and final returns are to be processed at:

Undergraduate Medical Education Office
08:00 - 16:30, Monday to Thursday
08:00 - 16:00, Friday

After-Hours Pager Loaners

Pager loaners are available and can be obtained at the designated site listed below. Pager loaners must be returned immediately after your shift.

Replacement Pagers and Batteries

During postgraduate or undergraduate medical student's training: The user of a pager will assume full responsibility and liability for its safekeeping and return. If users lose, misplace or damage their pagers, they shall agree to pay a $50.00 fee (deductible) for its replacement, payable to Alberta Health Services.

A copy of the cashier's receipt for payment of the lost pager should be faxed to the RMSO at 780-735-0756 and a copy retained for the user's records.

  • In order to receive a replacement pager, a copy of the cashier's receipt for payment of the lost pager or damaged pager must be returned to the designated site as listed below. A new pager will be issued at this time from the same location.
  • Arrangements have been made for residents to access pager batteries at designated sited listed below. Residents will be asked to sign for replacement batteries and will be provided with a maximum of two batteries per request.

After-hours: Residents are asked to pick up batteries from the Admitting satellite office, located in Emergency Department

After-hours: Residents are asked to pick up batteries from the RAH Switchboard office, located on the basement level of the Children's Health Centre
