Overview:

This elective gives you an exposure to the donor process which includes donor identification, referral assessment, donor stabilization, organ recovery, preservation and allocation.  You also gain exposure to transplant recipient selection, postoperative immunology and the ethics of transplantation.

Objectives:

KNOWLEDGE TO GAIN:

  • Brain Death, DCD, MAID diagnosis and organ/tissue donor criteria
  • Approaching families regarding organ donation, public attitudes
  • Describe the clinical management of the multiorgan donor, immunology of HLA system and the diagnosis of rejection.

SKILLS TO ACQUIRE:

  • Describe physiology of the immunological system, describe techniques for approaching families

ATTITUDES TO LEARN:

  • Demonstrate empathy, grief support, accommodation of numerous conflicting approaches
  • Defend the place for organ/tissue donation and transplantation in our Health Care System
  • Demonstrate courtesy and prompt concerned action
