Overview:

This half-day elective offers students an opportunity to meet the multi-disciplinary team that supports patients with tuberculosis from across Alberta.  Unlike others that occur in clinical settings, this elective will review a multitude of cases to understand both the medical management and social determinants of tuberculosis.  This elective would be held on select Wednesday afternoons (1 - 4 pm) at the STI/TB Services Office in the Seventh Street Plaza (2nd floor south) in Edmonton and can accommodate one medical student per available date.  Available dates for 2021: Sept 15, Oct 6, Nov 10, Dec 1.  Contact MEPC to confirm.

Objectives:

Completing this elective should:

  • Describe current epidemiology of tuberculosis in Alberta
  • Recognize common presentations of active tuberculosis
  • Differentiate latent and active tuberculosis
  • Discuss screening tests for latent tuberculosis
  • Plan contact tracing activities

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

Open to undergraduate medical students in Year 1 and 2 of program in Canadian Institutions.
