The Surgery Club works with the UAH OR Clinical Educators to set up orientations throughout the academic year.

The general contact email for the Surgery Club is msa.surgery.club@gmail.com. Its student members for the 2021-22 academic year are:
Steffane McLennan       steffane@ualberta.ca
Taylor Sawchuk             tlsawchu@ualberta.ca

Students should also watch this series of videos on OR orientation and proper sterile techniques created by Dr Rachel Khadaroo who is a trauma general surgeon at UAH. Those videos can be found here:
Surgical Infection Society – Prepping for the OR

**Due to COVID19, the OR also requires everyone in the theatre to know their N95 mask size, therefore you must prearrange fit testing prior to shadowing in the OR.**

AHS OR Nurse Educators have identified this mandatory AHS module on Laser Safety for anyone that is going to be in an OR theatre in which lasers are being used - predominantly Urology, Plastic Surgery and OHNS.
This module takes about 15 minutes to complete with an exam at the end.  The OR Nurse Educators are keeping track of who has completed the module and exam.

Please find the content for the AHS Level 1 Laser Safety Training here.

Objectives:

The shadowing and 12h electives in Surgery for Years 1 and 2 are intended to compliment the student's studies in the basic understanding of the body in health and disease, and to equip them with some of the skills with which they can start to interact with patients.  They will be introduced to the OR setting and the safety procedures that surround the environment by scrubbing in to a case and reviewing aseptic techniques with OR nurse educators.  Students will also be able to observe and participate in patient care in a clinic setting focusing on the role of surgery and surgeons in the health care system.  Students will gain an understanding of the role of surgery in the treatment of disease and in trauma settings.
