Overview:

As our population ages, the incidence of neurologic illnesses is increasing.  Exposure to neurology is useful regardless of what area of medicine is eventually selected as one's career path.

This elective provides the student with an opportunity to see patients with neurological problems under the supervision of various neurologists and neurology residents.  The student will be afforded exposure to various aspects of acute neurology including clinical assessment, diagnostic modalities, therapeutic options as well as psychosocial dynamics, functional impairment and rehabilitation.  There will be ample opportunity for interaction with patients, families and interdisciplinary team members.

As a medical student, you will spend time on our stroke and general neurology ward services.  Medical students will be involve with ward and ER consults as well as in the care of neurology in-patients.  While on service, you will be supervised closely by a resident in conjunction with the staff neurologist.

  • Approach to the Neurologic Patient and the Neurologic Examination
  • Approach to seizures/epilepsy/status epilepticus
  • Management and diagnosis of stroke and TIA
  • Dementia
  • Coma
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Central Nervous System Infections
  • Migraine
  • Lumbar/cervical disc syndromes
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Neruomuscular disease including neuropathies and myopathies
Objectives:

1) Develop an approach to the diagnosis of common neurological presentations, including localization and differential diagnosis

2) Develop an understanding of the available medical therapies for common neurological conditions, including but not limited to:  stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, neuromuscular and movement disorders.

Additional Notes:

**Outpatient Elective Time - students must have completed a minimum of 2 weeks of inpatient elective time.

There are several teaching sessions including intake rounds on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday mornings at 9AM; Stroke, Epilepsy and Neuroscience rounds on Wednesday and Friday.

Call Participation, in a typical 2 week elective, will be either 2 weekday calls or 1 weekday call and 1 weekend call

  • weekday calls = 5 - 10 PM
  • weekend calls = 9 - 5 PM

Students will be working with the on call resident(s)
