Overview: An elective in General Obstetrics and Gynecology offers the student a variety of patients and clinical challenges.  Each student will be assigned to a specialist Obstetrician and Gynecologist for office and hospital experience.  The student will have the opportunity to examine patients and develop proficiency in assessment and management.  Since there are several other groups of learners (Residents and Program Students) using the Department to gain clinical experience, it is necessary to set a limit on the number of elective students in the Department, usually one at any one time.
Objectives:

Completing this elective should:

  • help develop clinical skills, judgment and knowledge in assessing and diagnosing patients with obstetrical or gynecological problems
  • help develop the student's skill at performing a variety of assessments and procedures
Additional Notes:

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Undergraduate medical student in Canadian institutions
  • For student from 4-year programs, completion of a minimum of three years of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective
  • For students from 3-year programs, completion of a minimum of two years of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective
  • Submission of requests for elective (Internal University of Alberta students) at least 3 months before the requested elective date
  • Submission of requests for elective (External Applications) at least 6 months before the requested elective date
Priority Policy:  In order to utilize all available elective times, priority will be given to earlier applications.  Students are to apply as early as possible.  When more than 1 student applies at the same time for the same elective period, medical students in the University of Alberta Medicine Program will be given priority over students applying from other centre in Canada.
