Overview:

This two week elective in clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology will allow students to experience working in a tertiary level hospital in Edmonton.Students will have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of areas, including office clinics, the labour and delivery unit and surgical theatres.

Objectives:

As a focus in Maternal Fetal Medicine, students will have the opportunity to observe in the Perinatal Clinic at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the tertiary level referral center for Maternal Fetal Medicine for Northern and Central Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Eastern British Columbia and Western Saskatchewan.

Elective students on this rotation will also have the opportunity where possible to attend weekly rounds, academic half-days and participate in call if interested.

Medical students will gain exposure to:

  • Obstetrical ultrasounds for fetal anomalies, growth and assessment of fetal wellbeing
  • Prenatal diagnostic procedures:amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
  • Obstetrical consultations for fetal and maternal medical complications in pregnancy
  • Preconception counseling
  • Antepartum and intrapartum management of low and high risk obstetrical patients
  • Gynecologic consultations for a variety of medical conditions such as contraception, infertility, abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain and contraception
  • Intraoperative exposure to both minor and major gynecological surgical procedures
Additional Notes:
  • Electives will be limited due to consideration of core rotation students from the University of Alberta
  • Electives are limited to Canadian students with a special interest in Obstetrics and Gynecology
