Overview:

Instruction by anesthesiologists in the operating rooms and the recovery rooms. Guide reading of relevant literature in the Dept. of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and/or Medical Science Library.

Objectives:

Completing this elective should enable you to:

A. state or describe ...

  1. the scope of anesthetic practice
  2. the pharmacology, anatomy, and physiology relevant to administration of a local or general anesthetic
  3. the management of the unconscious patient
  4. the relationship between the anesthetic and the patient's pathology and medications
  5. the management of postoperative pain
  6. various monitoring devices.

B. improve skills in ...

  1. manually maintaining a patient's airway and permitting spontaneous breathing or artificially ventilating them
  2. performing endotracheal intubation
  3. starting intravenous infusions
  4. setting up and understand the use of monitoring devices customarily used during various types of anesthesia
  5. using a mechanical ventilator to ventilate a patient

C. understand the indications for regional anesthesia and have knowledge of the choices available.
