Overview:

For the Hematology elective, students have the opportunity to participate in the consultation service and attend several ambulatory care clinics with interesting patients and clinical conditions. Under the supervision of a Hematologist, the students will be involved in the examination, treatment planning and follow up of patients with bleeding disorders, thrombotic conditions, leukemias. Stem cell transplantation, hematopoietic growth factors and blood transfusions are frequently examined and discussed. Working with the Hematologist on laboratory assessment of thrombocytopenias and white cell disorders are also an important part of this elective.

Students will also attend several Hematology teaching sessions while on the elective. Topics include Coagulation/Bleeding, Hematologic Neoplasms, Lymphoproliferative Disorders, Venous Thromboembolism, Blood Films, Transfusion Medicine, and Myeloproliferative Disorders.

Objectives:
  • The student will develop clinical skills in assessing patients with a variety of hematological diseases in a clinical and consultation setting.
  • The student will acquire knowledge of how to implement treatment plans for patients with a variety of hematological diseases.
  • The student will gain experience with assessment of laboratory results.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Undergraduate medical students in Canadian institutions.
  • For students from 4-year programs, completion of a minimum of three years of medical school, prior to the requested elective date.
  • For students from 3-year programs, completion of a minimum of two years of medical school, prior to the requested elective date.
  • Submission of requests for elective (University of Alberta students or students from Canadian institutions) at least 3 months before the requested elective date.

Priority Policy: In order to utilize all available elective times, priority will be given to earlier applications. When more than 1 student applies at the same time for the same elective period, medical students in the University of Alberta MD program will be given priority over students applying from other centres in Canada.

Visiting Students: NETCARE & Connect Care access required for this elective: Students MUST request access for Netcare and Connect Care A MINIMUM OF 6 WEEKS before the elective start date. Students who do not place this request before the 6 week deadline will not be granted access. Once visiting students have applied through the AFMC Student Portal and their elective is confirmed, a confirmation email will automatically be generated with further instructions and the online training link for Netcare and Connect Care.
