Overview:

Intensive Care Medicine exposure to medical-surgical patients with one or more organ system failure requiring monitoring or support. Disease processes causing critical illness are reviewed and experience with monitoring and organ support technology is provided.

Objectives:

To introduce the senior medical student to the management of critically ill patients.

Additional Notes:

The ICU environment is fast-paced and dominated by complex multi-system patients. To ensure a meaningful educational experience we strongly recommend that this elective be undertaken in the fourth year of medical school rather than the third.  At minimum, students must have completed their core medicine rotation or general surgery rotation prior to an critical care medicine elective rotation.   This elective is for highly motivated students. Directed reading with pathophysiological correlation is expected.

Please note that the ICU elective needs to be a minimum of two weeks and can start at anytime during the month as long as it is for a two week duration and the dates you are requesting are available (one student per two week elective with priority based on sequence of application).

In order to ensure the process for scheduling University of Alberta students for ICU electives at the RAH and UAH is efficient, please note the following process: Request the elective through MedSIS. Please report for your first elective day to the front desk at the ICU at 0700 hours and have the Department of Critical Care Medicine resident on call paged. A teaching schedule and handout will be distributed at the start of the elective.

**We accept students electives only at the UAH or RAH site and no other. All student elective requests must come through MedSIS to our office via email (tbeko@ualberta.ca) for approval and not via direct contact with the physicians.

*Do not send multiple elective requests for different locations.  Your initial request will be offered if available or you will be placed in a different available location.

NETCARE ACCESS REQUIRED FOR THIS ELECTIVE:

Students MUST request access for Netcare and Connect Care A MINIMUM OF 6 WEEKS before the elective start date. Students who do not place this request before the 6 week deadline will not be granted access.
