Duration:

A standard elective is two weeks in length, however alternate arrangements may be considered upon request.  Minimum 2 weeks  Maximum 4 weeks

There are limited clinic opportunities over the summer months due to clinic availability, therefore please submit your requests for electives to begin mid-September onwards.

Overview:

The Glenrose Hospital is home to the Division of Developmental Pediatrics and has an extensive array of tertiary outpatient developmental assessment clinics and treatment programs. Students will work with various preceptors in the Infant-Toddler and Preschool Assessment Service (IPAS), School-Aged Neurodevelopmental Assessment Clinic (SNAC), Physical Medicine Clinic, and community learning and development clinics in assessing children from ages 0 - 18 years with a variety of developmental conditions including:

  • Delayed Motor Skills
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Speech and Language Delay
  • Autism
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
  • Specific Learning Disabilities
  • Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Objectives:

Our elective rotation objectives align with the Pediatric Undergraduate Program Directors of Canada (PUPDOC) national undergraduate curriculum.  Learners on elective will be able to:

  • Develop skills in history taking and in assessment of pediatric patients, with a focus on the core developmental domains:  gross motor, fine motor, speech and language, cognitive and social emotional;
  • Appreciate that prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal factors may influence development;
  • Solidify the importance of early identification and intervention for developmental, behavioural, and learning problems;
  • Develop skills related to work in a multi-disciplinary setting.
Additional Notes:

Students may also have instruction and observational experiences with typically developing toddlers and preschoolers. They may have opportunities to observe in treatment programs. There are no prerequisites for this elective.
