Overview:

An elective in Virtual care offers the student an opportunity to understand how Virtual care models may play a role in patients with complex medical needs. Under the supervision of a GIM physician, the student will have the opportunity to examine patients and develop proficiency in the initial assessment and management of patients being referred for home hospitalization care and to see how virtual care can support patient’s management in a home hospital environment

Objectives:

Edmonton Zone Virtual Hospital Objectives for Medical Student Rotation/elective :

  1. Understand the multidisciplinary team approach to virtual inpatient and virtual outpatient
  2. Collaborate with EZVH nurses, pharmacists and Internal Medicine staff to provide ongoing management plans for patients admitted to
  3. Attend virtual morning huddle (08:30) to learn about patients and arrange for
  4. Perform daily telephone calls to patients being followed by EZVH and discuss phone calls with nurse/pharmacist prior to daily multidisciplinary meeting. Some of these calls may be
  5. Attend (virtually or in-person) daily team conference (typically at 13:00, but time may vary) to discuss all EZVH
  6. Complete admission history and physical exam on patients being admitted to EZVH if these can be done virtually/remotely. Write up admission history and physical (H & P) in Connect Care, which need to be co-signed by staff. Propose and develop management plans for new
  7. Propose management plans for assigned VH patients. Write progress notes (to be co-signed by staff) on assigned
  8. Participate in Virtual Video (SKYPE or Zoom) calls with the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH)- Community Response Team (CRT) if they are sent out to see patients in their
  9. Participate in med reconciliation and review with
  10. Learn about the information processes and technologies that can support Virtual Care.
  11. Understand the limitations of inpatient and outpatient virtual care environments

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Undergraduate medical students at the Univerity of Alberta
  • For students from 4-year programs, completion of a minimum of three years of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective. Needs to have completed Core Internal medicine training rotation
  • For students from 3-year programs, completion of a minimum of two years of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective. Needs to have completed Core Internal medicine training rotation
  • Submission of requests for elective (Internal University of Alberta students) at least 3 months before the requested elective date.

Priority Policy: In order to utilize all available elective times, priority will be given to earlier applications. Students are to apply as early as possible. 

Best candidate would be 4th year student having completed all core rotations
