Overview: |
An elective in Emergency Medicine offers the student a large variety of interesting patients and clinical challenges. Under the supervision of an Emergency physician, the student will have the opportunity to examine patients and develop proficiency in the initial assessment and management of undiagnosed diseases and injuries. They will observe and assist in the initial management and assessment of major medical, surgical and other emergencies. They will perform, under supervision, a variety of outpatient procedures. Since there are several other groups (Residents, Paramedics, etc.) using the Emergency Department to gain clinical experience, it is necessary to set a limit on the number of students in the Emergency Department at any one time, in order that each student will derive maximum benefit from his or her time in the Emergency Department. Each student will be assigned evening, night and weekend shifts during the elective. |
