Overview:

An elective in Emergency Medicine offers the student a large variety of interesting patients and clinical challenges. Under the supervision of an Emergency physician, the student will have the opportunity to examine patients and develop proficiency in the initial assessment and management of undiagnosed diseases and injuries. They will observe and assist in the initial management and assessment of major medical, surgical and other emergencies. They will perform, under supervision, a variety of outpatient procedures. Since there are several other groups (Residents, Paramedics, etc.) using the Emergency Department to gain clinical experience, it is necessary to set a limit on the number of students in the Emergency Department at any one time, in order that each student will derive maximum benefit from his or her time in the Emergency Department. Each student will be assigned evening, night and weekend shifts during the elective.

Objectives:

Completing this elective should:

  • help develop clinical skills, judgment and knowledge in assessing and diagnosing patients with emergent problems.
  • introduce the student to initial assessment stabilization and/or resuscitation of seriously ill or injured patients.
  • help develop the student's skill at performing a variety of procedures and techniques.
Additional Notes:

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Undergraduate medical students in Canadian or LCME-accredited institutions.
  • Students are permitted to apply for electives with start dates from the January prior to their final year and onward.  However, there is limited availability from January to April.  There is more availability from April to August, once the previous class has completed their core rotations.
