Overview:

Consultations make up a major component of the clinical practice of all medical specialists including General Internists. General Internists routinely provide consultations for primary care physicians as well as for other specialists including consultations for per-operative care for surgical inpatients.

Students rotating through the GIM Ward Consult Service will be exposed to assessment of preoperative patients and a wide range of consultations involving inpatients from surgical services. Psychiatry and Family Medicine or other medical subspecialty services. They will also likely see patients in the General Internal Medicine Urgent Access Clinic.

Objectives:

To demonstrate familiarity with the consultational process through and by:

  1. Identification of specific reasons for referral.
  2. Obtaining pertinent patient history.
  3. Demonstration of physical examination skills to identify important related physical findings.
  4. Integration of findings in history, physical examination, results of laboratory investigation and generate a comprehensive problem list and differential diagnosis.
  5. Develop and outline effective plans for further investigations and management of the referred patient.

To compose and write focused but complete data bases on referred patients, and document this information clearly and neatly in the medical record.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  1. Undergraduate medical students in Canadian institutions.
  2. Year 3 and Year 4 Medical Students MUST have completed their 6-8 week Internal Medicine rotation in order to be considered. Your request will be denied if you do not meet this prerequisite.

Priority Policy: In order to utilize all available elective times, priority will be given to earlier applications. Students are to apply as early as possible. When more than 1 student applies at the same time for the same elective period, medical students in the University of Alberta Medicine Program will be given priority over students applying from other centres in Canada.

Students completing elective rotations on the GIM Consultation service will be evaluated by the supervising staff consultants, based on direct observations of their performance, written data bases, progress notes and consultation reports, as well as input from the Senior Resident on the service and other health care professionals interacting with the service.
