Overview:

This 1 week elective in Public Health & Preventive Medicine is a collaboration with the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Alberta. During the elective, students will take the February Reading Week MED 585 course to get exposure to and gain an understanding how our physical and social environments impact health and how to collaborate with non-health sector professionals, such as urban planners, to improve community environments to better support the health of patients and families, including vulnerable populations. This elective is conducted over 4 full days (8am - 5pm) Tuesday to Friday of February Reading Week. While there is no exam, there will be fieldwork, a group project and an individual paper to be completed. There are currently up to 2 positions available each ear for interested Year 3 or 4 medical students.

Objectives:

Completing this elective should:

  • Increase understanding of the main disease burdens and risk factors in Canadian populations and globally today
  • Increase understanding of the determinants of health

Increase understanding of Public Health and Preventative Medicine approaches to improve population health and to address disease epidemics

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Open to undergraduate medical students in year 3 or 4 program in Canadian Institutions.
