Overview:

Students will participate in morphology, transfusion and coagulation rounds and they will also be scheduled to observe bone marrow procurements with the resident on service. The student will also observe first hand how special tests (e.g. flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology and histocompatibility) contribute to the diagnosis and management of hematological conditions and disorders.

By the end of this elective, students will understand the role of the hematopathologist and the laboratory in the clinical diagnosis, investigation and management of pediatric and adult patients across various clinical contexts and specialties. Students will also gain insight into how the hematopathologist and other laboratory professionals contribute to patient safety, healthcare quality improvement and resource stewardship

 

Objectives:

Completion of this elective will enable students to gain experience in laboratory hematology and understand how laboratory resources and data are utilized in the diagnosis and management of clinical disorders.
