ATTENTION STUDENTS: Adult Infectious Diseases cannot consider elective requests beyond July 1 until they have their schedules released for the next academic year. Requests will be kept on file and responded to in order of submission after the schedules are received in May.

Overview:

Participation in the daily activities of the Division of Infectious Disease, including consulting and primary care activities within the UAH (or RAH).

Objectives:

Completing this elective should enable you to:

  • see a variety of patients with infectious diseases including bacterial infections, HIV, Hepatitis C and fungal infections as they present to an active Infectious Disease Consulting Service.
  • participate in clinical teaching rounds and conferences in a more meaningful way.
  • become familiar with the use of antimicrobial drugs and recognize need for dose modifications in a variety of clinical situations.
  • become familiar with the activities of the diagnostic microbiology laboratory and how laboratory data is utilized as a guide in clinical diagnosis and selection of therapy.
Additional Notes:

Students must have completed their Internal Medicine rotation to attend this elective.

The chief purpose of the elective is to familiarize individuals with the presentations, diagnosis and management of a variety of infectious diseases. Empiric antibiotic selection, dose adjustments and side effects of antimicrobials are discussed regularly. Additionally, optimal utilization of the microbiology laboratory in a manner which is reasonable from a clinical standpoint is emphasized.

Visiting Students: NETCARE ACCESS REQUIRED FOR THIS ELECTIVE: Students MUST request access for Netcare A MINIMUM OF 6 WEEKS before the elective start date. Students who do not place this request before the 6 week deadline will not be granted access. Once visiting students have applied through the AFMC Student Portal and their elective is confirmed, a confirmation email will automatically be generated with further instructions and the online training link for Netcare.
