Overview: |
Depending on the student's needs, time will be spent on the Level II or Level III nursery at one or more of the above locations. At the Philip C. Etches NICU at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Grey Nuns Hospital, and Misericordia Hospital, the student will be exposed to care of the premature infant, and newborns with jaundice, sepsis, or congenital anomalies. Infants with conditions requiring surgical intervention are mostly cared for at the David Schiff NICU at the University of Alberta Hospital. Daily Rounds are made with the attending Neonatologist, Neonatal -Perinatal Medicine Trainees, Residents, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, and Multidisciplinary Team. The student will be encouraged to be involved in direct patient care, participate in rounds, attend newborn deliveries, and perform various procedures under supervision. The student will be taught how to examine newborn infants and to recognize common disorders presenting in the neonate. |
