Overview: Students choosing an elective in the field of nuclear medicine will have an opportunity to observe technical and diagnostic work in the Division of Nuclear Medicine. Nuclear medicine imaging uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose, evaluate or treat a variety of diseases. These include many types of cancers, heart disease, gastrointestinal, endocrine or neurological disorders and other abnormalities. It is an everchanging field that is quite fascinating.

Students are encouraged to attend all rounds, lectures, and seminars in the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, of which Nuclear Medicine is a sub-division.
Objectives:

The intent is to introduce the elective student to the field of nuclear medicine and demonstrate its relevance in the clinical context. The student will learn the basic concepts of nuclear medicine imaging and how it differs from the rest of diagnostic imaging. The student will also see the practice of "cross correlation imaging", whereby nuclear medicine is both dependent on and complements the rest of diagnostic imaging to be maximally effective. Hopefully, the student will learn what nuclear medicine can offer with respect to clinical investigations and management.

The student will be introduced to general nuclear medicine procedures such as bones scintigraphy, myocardial perfusion imaging, hepatobiliary and scintigraphy etc. There will be some immediate exposure to PET/CT at UAH and to SPECT/CT at RAH.

Additional Notes: NetCare access required for this elective. Connect Care access may be required for this elective.
