Overview: This elective in pediatric CTU call and pediatric emergency offers the student the ability to assess and begin initial management of acutely ill children presenting to the Stollery Children's Hospital. The pediatric emergency component will involve initial assessment and management of pediatric patients presenting to the Stollery ED, under the supervision of a Pediatric Emergency physician. The CTU call component will involve working with the on-call team for pediatric hospital medicine (Residents, Staff), primarily in the role of admission of patients to the inpatient (CTU) teams, but also assisting residents with acute ward issues of current pediatric inpatients. Scheduling determined only after core rotation students are scheduled to determine available openings in both the CTU call schedule and the student ED shift schedule. As a result, this will typically include multiple overnights (call and ED shifts) with occasional day or evening shifts based on availability. This elective will include a total of seven shifts during a two week period.
Objectives:

At the completion of this elective, students will be able to:

  • Initiate the assessment and management of acutely ill children presenting to the emergency department
  • Complete a thorough, organized patient assessment (history and physical examination) at time of admission to hospital including documentation and initial management plan
  • Communicate effectively with patients and families as well as members of the health care team (nurses, residents, staff, and allied health)
  • Discuss the approach to common pediatric presentations to the ED
Additional Notes:

Must have completed core pediatric clerkship or integrated community clerkship.

This elective is available when we do not have students on rotation, August 14 - 27, 2023 and December 18 - 23, 2023.
