Overview:

This 2-week elective will allow the medical student to experience life in a pediatric subspecialty. The weekly schedule will include covering a ward consultation service (with acute and chronic care patients), 2 half day outpatient clinics, and referrals from PICU and NICU. In addition to that, the student will be expected to attend: Nephrology journal club, renal pathology rounds, Pediatric intake rounds, Pediatric grand rounds and Nephrology rounds (all of which occur on a weekly basis). During the elective time, there will be ample time for free reading and in addition, the student may also be requested to present interesting cases on an informal basis or research interesting topics. Informal sessions will be carried out by the attending Pediatric Nephrologist ~ 3 times/week where a topic of choice will be discussed in a seminar format.

Objectives:

Will include the following: to be competent to manage fluid and electrolyte/acid-base problems in pediatrics; to know a general approach to hematuria and proteinuria; to know how to interpret a urinalysis (including microscopic exam) and renal function tests; to know the causes of acute and chronic kidney disease and the complications; and a basic approach to a hypertensive child.

Additional Notes:

It is preferred that students applying to this elective have completed their core rotation in Pediatrics but it is not required.
